Message from Senior Priest, Shusse Inari Jinja and President of Shusse Inari Shrine of America

Because Shinto is polytheist – believing there are divine spirits (kami) within things and animating natural phenomena – we have accepted many things that came to Japan, such as Buddhism in the 6th century. I believe this mentality of acceptance has helped the Japanese create hybrids, combining the best elements to make even better things such as automobiles, food, and hi-tech products.

Traditionally in Christianity, nature has been considered “evil” and thus in need of conquering, but Shinto has always been about living harmoniously with nature. Now, with global warming and the prospect of nature’s destruction, I believe it is time we know about the way of Shinto. Just as in Japanese mythology, where every Kami-Ari-Zuki (October/November) deities from all over Japan come together in Izumo for mutual benefit, we should try understanding and accepting other people to find the best way to live together.
