Why are Sakaki branches used as Shinto offerings?

The ancient Japanese people thought the Sakaki tree was sacred. Looking at a Sakaki tree branch, the branch appears to grow and spread in a similar manner to a family tree diagram. The Sakaki tree represents the Descendants’ prosperity and the family’s prosperity in obtaining a bountiful harvest.
