13 Mairi (Age 13 Celebration)

A celebration for boys and girls who turn 13 years of age.

Jūsan Mairi is a celebration for both boys and girls at 13 years of age (Kazoedoshi). Historically, this was the age at which children came of age, which led to the custom of wearing a Haori (overcoat) measured for an adult over kimono. Following the traditional lunar calendar, the shrine visit for Jūsan Mairi is made on about March 13th in the lunar calendar (between about March 13th and May 13th in the Gregorian calendar), and visitors pray for good fortune and healthy growth.

The ceremony has a minimum donation of $100 plus shipping when applicable and includes one Omamori.
