Japanese people celebrate Shichigosan on November 15th. It is a ceremony that honors children and dates back to the 17th century in Japan. For all children who are three, boys who are five, and girls who are seven, this is a very big day in their lives (ages are in Eastern Age*). Children are dressed in their best traditional, age-appropriate clothes and their parents take them to shrines to be blessed by priests. The parents and children both offer their thanks to the deities in appreciation. For the parents, this marks a significant step in their child’s life and one in which the parents are grateful for the child’s health and well-being.

We can arrange Kimono rental and fitting as well as photo shooting. Please contact us for details.

*Eastern Age: the year of your birth counts as being 1 year old. So if you are 20 years old, you are 21 years old in Eastern Age.

After the child’s birth, they are brought to a Shinto shrine for worship, to show gratitude for their safe delivery, and to pray for the child’s health and growth. The first shrine visit takes place at least one month after the birth of the child, and customarily the parents and the paternal grandmother of the child arrange a suitable date to visit together.
